BODIL JANE

Amsterdam – the Netherlands

Bodil was already quite famous when we approached her and by now she is a big name in her field worldwide, working for big brands like Unicef, The New York Times and Van Gogh Museum among others. We feel so lucky to have worked with her!

Besides her being very nice and her obvious talent she is also a real business woman. She was the one that taught us on how to appropriately use the work of artists. We loved the Grow & Bloom illustration she made so much we wanted to put it on just about everything, also in bell jars and on our cargo bike. But usage of any artwork with intellectual property has limits.
We were happy with this lesson because our first goal is to appreciate and promote the work of others
(and of course have beautiful distinctively packaging)

Bodil her work is very recognisable by the use of colour and detail. She often draws inspiration from botanic gardens, a perfect fit for our Grow & Bloom Collection.

When/how did you find out about your talent?
Already at an early age, I knew that I was going work in the creative field. Growing up, I was always making things. When we went on vacation I always brought along scrapbooks, journals and drawing books. We also had a weekly crafty / drawing afternoon with the kids from the neighborhood.

When I finished high school I studied illustration at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.

What is your ‘signature’ when it comes to your work?
My illustrations are playful, colorful and feminine. All of my illustrations include handmade elements and digital techniques. I think they have a very handmade feel, because I use a lot of textures and elements painted in watercolors. I like non-digital (looking) illustration styles that are a little clumsy and charming. I don’t like perfect things in general. The colors are very important in my work. I’m always looking for new and exciting color combinations. I love full illustrations with a lot of different objects and patterns.

What was your favorite job/assignment this far?
I like most of my jobs! But one of my favorite recent jobs was designing 14 greetings cards for stationery brand Red Cap Cards. I love their products! They gave me a lot of creative freedom and I love the way the collection looks. I could think of a theme and just design whatever I wanted. Those are the best jobs.

What is your favorite item from the Grow & Bloom collection/Daydreamers collection?
Personally I love the golden bracelet with 4 daisy’s the most (Bloom when you are ready). I think it’s very classy and I like simple jewelry.

In collaboration with Lennebelle Jewelry, Bodil Jane designed the charms and an illustration for the packaging of the Grow & Bloom Collection
